Our Lady of Guadalupe de Cebu

Our Lady of Guadalupe de Cebu
Most of you may have learned about the Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico, when she appeared to Juan Diego in 1521. But did you know that Our Lady of Guadalupe is also the patroness of the Philippines. It all began in 1880 when an image of Our Lady was found inside a cave in the town of Guadalupe, Cebu which was then part of the town of San Nicolas de Tolentino in Cebu. At first, the image stayed in the church of San Nicolas de Tolentino and was only taken out for the December 12 feast day. From 1889 to 1901, it was only a simple town fiesta before the image would be returned back to the San Nicolas Church after the fiesta.
In 1902, a cholera epidemic broke out in Guadalupe, and one of the prayer leaders invoked the Holy Cross and Our Lady to end the epidemic. A procession of Our Lady and the Cross were held, and so the epidemic was healed. During the World War II Japanese occupation, the image was hid inside a house but the house was destroyed but the image was spared. Japanese soldiers would report seeing a lady appear and disappear.
The image during the feast of Santo Nino would always join the feast of the Santo Nino, joining a ''Walk with Mary'' on the ninth day of the novena to Santo Nino. It has two feasts, that of December 12 and on July 16, which commemorates the anniversary of the epidemic.
Our Lady of Guadalupe de Cebu, pray for us!
