Pedro Calungsod, role model for the Catholic faith

I want to tell you about a local Catholic hero of the Philippines, named Pedro Calungsod who was a Cebuano missionary in Guam. He was born in Ginatilan, Cebu in 1650 or 1654. In 1668, at the age of 14, he became a catechist in Guam under the Jesuit priest, Fr. Diego Luis de San Vitores, SJ.

They sailed to the Guam in the Mariana Islands, named after Queen regent Mariana of Austria, originally named Isla de los Landrones (The island of the thieves). There, Calungsod catechized the native Chamorro people and he served with Father Diego in the Traditional Latin Mass.

However, trouble started to come. A Chinese man named Choco started to envy the missionaries, who were starting to become very popular, started a rumor that the water used for baptism was poisonous.

He made friends with native groups called Macanjas and Urritaos who believed his lies. They started to plot against the missionaries, sometimes even killing them.

On April 2, 1672, Saturday before Palm Sunday, Pedro Claungsod and Father Diego were looking for a runaway companion when they heard the news that one of the natives that Father Diego previously baptized, Matapang had a baby girl. Matapang who became an apostate, suddenly shouted at them, saying that they will be killed if his baby daughter would be baptized.

Meanwhile, as Calungsod and Fr. Diego were catechizing the natives, Matapang was informed that his daughter was baptized. He became furious and told another native, Hirao to join him. Hirao refused but after Matapang called him a coward, Hirao agreed. The two men angrily charged towards the missionaries throwing spears at them. Eventually, Calungsod was shot in the chest with a spear and was finished off with a machete blow to the head.

Father Diego then absolved Calungsod for the last time. Eventually, Fr. Diego told Matapang to repent. However, Matapang refused. Fr. Diego then said, ''Si Yuos Maase, Matapang'' (God have mercy on you, Matapang). He was then bayoneted with a spear, and finished with a machete to the head.

                                                      The Martyrdom of Father Diego
Eventually, Matapang stole the crucifix of Fr. Diego and destroyed it while blaspheming God. The bodies of the martyrs were stripped off their clothing, tied together, with rocks on their feet, and their bodies were thrown into the Pacific ocean. Matapang later set fire on the place where the martyrdom happened. You can still visit the site where Calungsod and Fr. Diego were martyred in Tumhon Beach, Guam.
Pedro Calungsod has many shrines in Cebu, and was ''canonized'' by the Novus Ordo, however, even if he is not a saint, I can still venerate him, especially he alongside Fr. Diego did a lot for the salvation of souls. If Pedro Calungsod were to see the modernism of Vatican II that had plagued the Philippines and Guam, I am sure he would be shocked.
