Saint Joseph of Mandaue, Cebu

San Jose de Mandaue
St. Joseph is an important figure in Christianity, being the foster father of Our Lord, as well as the patron saint of the workers and the dying. According to tradition, he died in the arms of Jesus and Mary close to him. He is also the patron saint of the Universal Church.
The image was made around the year 1600 when Jesuit missionaries started their mission in what is now the city of Mandaue in Cebu, Philippines. When the Jesuits were expelled in 1768, the Augustinian Recollects took over until the Philippine Revolution in 1898. Since then, it has been administered by secular clergy. The church was damaged in an earthquake in 1922 and renovations were finished in 1936. The church was destroyed during World War II but the image was spared. It has been a National Shrine since 2001. The shrine takes part in the feast of the Santo Nino, when before the feast, the image of Santo Nino and Our Lady of Guadalupe will stay overnight in the shrine. Since 2024, the image of St. Joseph has taken part in the feast of the Santo Nino. The feast is March 19 and May 8.
