My commentary on the First Sunday of Lent
A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Matthew:
At that time Jesus was led by the spirit into the desert, to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted 40 days and 40 nights, afterwards he was hungry. And the tempter coming said unto him: If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones be made bread. Who answered and said: It is written, Not in bread alone doth man live, but in every word that proceedeth from the mouth of God. Then the devil took Him up into the holy city and set Him upon the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him: If Thou be the Son of God, cast Thyself down. For it is written: That he hath given His angels charge over Thee, and in their hands shall they bear Thee up, lest perhaps Thou dash Thy foot against a stone. Jesus said to him: It is written again, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord Thy God. Again the devil took Him up into a very high mountain and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and the glory of them, and said to Him: All these will I give Thee, if falling down Thou wilt adore me. Then Jesus saith to him: Begone Satan! for it is written: The Lord thy God shalt thou adore, and Him only shalt thou adore, and Him only shalt thou serve. Then the devil left Him: and behold Angels came and ministered to him.
Commentary:
The gospel of the First Sunday of Lent, is one my favorites, firstly, because my first Latin Mass happened on the First Sunday of Lent, and secondly it talks about temptation. According to Bishop Donald Sanborn, ''The typical young man today becomes addicted to sexual pleasures at a young age. This addiction blinds him to spiritual things, leaving him in a rut from which he cannot escape on his own power. This addiction, furthermore, causes him to be depressed, since he knows down deep that he is acting like an animal, and not like a human being.'' That is really true, especially among the modern generations. Our Lady at Quito said to Mother Mariana that the sacrament of Matrimony would be profaned by Freemasonry. How many sinners fell prey to both their own sins as well as Protestant preachers due to their vices and immoralities?
I remember watching the Snow White film when I was still 4 years old, in which the evil queen, disguised as an old woman, tempted Snow White into eating the poisoned apple. It reminds me of Satan who tempted Eve into eating the forbidden fruit. When Snow White ate the poisoned apple, she fell dead due to the poison, just as how Eve fell when she ate the forbidden fruit.
Just like Snow White, we should beware the temptations that come in life.jpg)
