The Holy Face Flag

If traditional Catholics mostly have flags of the Sacred Heart as counter-revolutionary and military flags, in Russia, their equivalent is the Holy Face, also known as the Savior Not Made by Hands. This icon of the Holy Face has its origin in Eastern Christianity. It is said this is the replica of the cloth with the Holy Face of Jesus given to King Abgar by Saint Jude. It is also called the Holy Mandylion, which is different from Veronica’s veil and the Shroud of Turin. The relic was brought to Europe by Crusaders, but unfortunately had been lost during the French Revolution.

This flag was adopted by Russia when under Prince Saint Vladimir, converted to Byzantine Christianity. Since then, this standard had been used by Russians from medieval times to the Russia Ukraine War. This flag had been used by various heroes like Alexander Nevsky, Dmitry Donskoy, Ivan the Terrible, Kuzma Minin and Dmitry Pozarsky. Here is a gallery of the Holy Face flag being used by Russia.

The attack of the dead men. In 1915, at the Osowiec fortress, dying Russian soldiers charged towards the German soldiers. It was immortalized as the Attack of the Dead Men. You can see one of the soldiers holding a flag of the Holy Face with the words ‘’God with Us’’.

Novena to the Holy Face of Jesus

O Lord Jesus Christ, in presenting ourselves before Thy adorable Face, to ask of Thee the graces of which we stand in most need, we beseech Thee above all, to grant us that interior disposition of never refusing at any time what Thou requires of us by Thy holy commandments and divine inspirations. Amen.

O Good Jesus, who has said, “Ask and you shall receive, seek and ye shall find, knock and it shall be opened to you,” grant us O Lord, that faith which obtains all, or supply in us what may be deficient. Grant us, by the pure effect of Thy charity, and for Thy eternal glory, the graces that we need and that we seek from Thy infinite mercy. Amen.

Be merciful to us, O my God, and reject not our prayers, when amid our afflictions, we call upon Thy Holy Name and seek with love and confidence Thy adorable Face. Amen.

O Almighty and Eternal God, look upon the Face of Thy Son Jesus. We present It to Thee with confidence to implore Thy pardon. The All-Merciful Advocate opens His Lips to plead our cause. Hearken to His cries, behold His tears, O God, and through His infinite merits, hear Him when He intercedes for us poor miserable sinners. Amen.

Adorable Face of Jesus, my only love, my light and my life, grant that I may know Thee, love Thee and serve Thee alone, that I may live with Thee, by Thee and for Thee. Amen.

Eternal Father, I offer Thee the adorable Face of Thy Beloved Son for the honor and glory of Thy Name, for the conversion of sinners and the salvation of the dying. O Divine Jesus, through Thy Face and Name, save us. Our Hope is in the virtue of Thy Holy Name! Amen.

Father Leandro Moran, OSA

 He was my grandmother's priest in the 1950s. My grandmother used to attend the Latin Mass with him in the Santo Nino Church. He used to be the former parish priest of Bolhoon in Southern Cebu from 1922 - 1948 and was assigned in the Santo Nino Church from 1948 until his death in 1979. Father Alexander Kryssov

  He is one of the rare Russian Catholic, especially Traditional Catholic priests. He is a sedevacantist priest from the CMRI. He was born on June 26, 1966 in Fryazino, Moscow, Soviet Union. In 1984, he converted to Catholicism under the Lithuanian priest Father Stanislaus Mazeika, MIC.                                                             Fr. Stanislaus Mazeika, MIC Father Mazeika was a traditionalist priest from Lithuania.
