Martyrs of the Holy Mass - The story of the Brazilian martyrs of Natal, Rio Grande do Norte
A. Rubi

In the 17th century, Brazil, a colony of Portugal was invaded by anti-Catholic Dutch Protestants.
The Dutch committed atrocities towards the Catholic civilians, especially in what is now Pernambuco.
Meanwhile in Natal, Rio Grande Do Norte, there was a Brazilian priest named Father Andre de Soveral, who was a former Jesuit priest turned diocesan priest. In Dutch occupied Natal, in a church in the town of Cunhau (cun-ha-woo), as he was celebrating the Tridentine Latin Mass with civilians on July 16, 1645, a Dutch general named Jacob Rabe and his Indian allies stormed the church and killed everyone, including a layman named Domingos Carvalho. Father de Soveral was only 74 years old.

The second massacre took place on October 3, 1645 in the town of Uruacu (oo ra soo). The town's parish priest was Father Ambrosio Francisco Ferro from the Azores. There, another Dutch massacre of Catholics took place with their Indian allies. One of the victims was Mateus Moreira, who had his heart taken out of him when still alive. Moreira's last words was ''Praise be the Blessed Sacrament''. In 1647, at the Battle of Guararapes, the Dutch were kicked out of Brazil. The fate of their relics remain unknown.

It is notable that I tell this story because they were Novus Ordo beatified alongside our Pedro Calungsod in 2000. The lesson to be learned in the story of the martyrs of Natal is to stay firm in the Catholic faith even if you will loose your life for it. Father De Soveral served the Latin Mass to the very end and paid his life with it. It is notable that the Dutch persecutors of Catholics were Calvinists. John Calvin was a radical anti-Catholic, yet the Novus Ordo sect praises John Calvin.

Let us pray to the martyrs of Natal that they may inspire us in this time of great apostasy and confusion in the church, and when it seems that the Latin Mass is persecuted.
