How Disney made me Traditionalist Catholic
By Antonio Rubi
Everyone knows the Walt Disney Company, how it was founded in 1923 and started with a mouse in 1928, and everyone knows it compromised since Disney died and as a result of Vatican II and modernism, it succumbed to bad teaching. But did you know that Disney was one of the main factors in making me traditionalist Catholic?
When I was a toddler, I grew up with many things Disney. I liked watching their cartoons, and enjoyed their characters, specifically the Princess characters. I watch various Disney shows, but I only appreciate two, Snow White (1937) and Alice in Wonderland (1951). The rest of the Disney shows were watched through an educational program and through books, and some of the movies I would not see until I was 18 years old.
Specifically, I appreciate more on the princess classics, even if I am a boy myself. While most Disney Princess fans are girls, there were boys that grew up with them. There were lots of boys who grew up watching Snow White and all the other princesses like Aurora and Ariel.
During my toddler years, especially when I was exposed to innocence and the Marvelous (kudos to Tradition In Action), aside from being exposed to my Catholic devotion like Santo Nino, I was exposed to Disney and other non-Disney marvelous children's story books like other non-Disney princesses, illustrations that looked like the Victorian era, biblical stories and historical books. Some of my books were published during the Victorian era, some others from the 1950s up to the 1980s to 1990s. So I had an outdated book and video timeline because mom bought second hand books. Even the cartoons I watched as a toddler in the late 2000s to early 2010s were from the 1930s to 1970s. I was only exposed to 3D animation in 2011. This would later impact my future, especially in my late teens.
As I slowly grew into a big boy, I started to realize that Disney was modernist, especially when I saw their shows reflected the modern era, and what shocked me was when they owned Marvel and Star Wars. I even asked myself, ''What has Disney Princesses got to do with a Superhero? They are totally unrelated!''. At the time, I was too ashamed to ask the question up until I realized the question when I became a traditionalist. Another question I answered was why there was not a scene of the Disney characters praying the rosary or attending mass, because of the Catholic atmosphere here in the Philippines. I even called the Disney company ''un-Disney'' and ''modernist'' because of what I saw.
When I became a traditionalist in 2022, my answers were finally answered. I began to watch Alice in 2023 and Snow White in 2024 to revive childhood memories, and a bit of hand drawn animated movies in late 2024. However as of now, I occasionally watch Disney, because I focus watching on history and religion, having recently appreciated Princess Melody, the daughter of Ariel (because she looks like a Spanish girl during the Spanish era Philippines and was the childhood character of my cousin).
I am no Disney fan, I do not even subscribe to Disney Plus, I only appreciate a few Disney characters for nurturing my childhood and for making me a good Catholic, yet I detest the modernism of the Disney company because of woke ideology and through witchcraft through their latest movie called ''Hexed'' (Disney's version of Harry Potter). When I even watch Disney cartoons, I do not even play Disney songs but historical songs. I only consider Disney, especially the classic princesses to play a part in my formation for admiring the past, alongside the other childhood characters who are non-Disney, like Heidi. It is thanks to them why I admire the old days, like the Latin Mass, as well as the monarchies of old like Louis XVI and Tsar Nicholas, and of course the much hated Spanish colonial regime in the Philippines. While many Filipino youth detest the colonial era, I am most likely the only one still commemorating it. It was thanks to Disney Princesses why I made my own ''Catholic princess'' Catalina Santos. I am grateful for my childhood memories unlike other youths, who are busy with worldliness, and I even offer pictures of Disney characters as ex-votos to the Santo Nino in the Basilica of Santo Nino in gratitude for my happy childhood. I am grateful also to +Adriana Casselotti and Kathy Beaumont for entertaining me as a toddler.
Be grateful to God for everything he has given you, and do not put it to waste.
