The Holy Face Flag Antonio Jose Rubi If traditional Catholics mostly have flags of the Sacred Heart as counter-revolutionary and military flags, in Russia, their equivalent is the Holy Face, also known as the Savior Not Made by Hands. This icon of the Holy Face has its origin in Eastern Christianity. It is said this is the replica of the cloth with the Holy Face of Jesus given to King Abgar by Saint Jude. It is also called the Holy Mandylion, which is different from Veronica’s veil and the Shroud of Turin. The relic was brought to Europe by Crusaders, but unfortunately had been lost during the French Revolution. This flag was adopted by Russia when under Prince Saint Vladimir, converted to Byzantine Christianity. Since then, this standard had been used by Russians from medieval times to the Russia Ukraine War.
